Cleaning the Kingdom of Shades

This past week we continued working on La Bayadère, and on top of learning several new dances from the wedding scene, we also spent quite a bit of time cleaning Kingdom of the Shades with ballet mistress Shannon Parsley. Going back through choreography that we have already learned and “cleaning” it is tedious, but it’s a necessary part of any corps dance. Cleaning involves clarifying the movements and the counts and making sure that we are all in line and moving exactly like the girl in front of us. Shades corps is an interesting experience for me because the tall girls are downstage at the front of the line and the shorter girls are upstage, which is unusual. So standing in the front line, I am having to make sure I travel uniformly and set my line in the correct spot, as I keep on eye on the girls on both sides of me. Overall, It’s been a strenuous week, but really working through this now will make the Kingdom of the Shades really effective on stage, so it’s definitely worth it.

  1. There are few things more awe-inspiring than a well-drilled Shades corps, so when you're feeling that it's tedious, remind yourself that the audience really appreciates the result!
